Amazons
Background
The Amazons are a loose confederation of tribes who live in the dense jungle of Leonera’s hinterland. They have a mixed background, as some of them have turned their backs on life in the city (and often a violent man, a dominant family or similar) to join the Amazons.
Such women are welcomed by the Amazons with open arms and integrated into the tribes. Meaning that Amazons can be seen more and more frequently in the city as well. Especially when they see to their tribe’s future by temporarily kidnapping the young men from the outlying areas.
Hiring
Challenge level
An Amazon crew can hire the following number of characters from the different ranks:
- 1 Leader
- 1+ Deckhand characters
- 0-1 Specialist for each deckhand character
- 0-1 Mercenary. A mercenary takes up a specialist’s place. The Amazons will not hire any male mercenaries!
History
Almost a decade ago, the Amazons noticed that their Great Earthmother’s flow of energy was disturbed by defiled temples on Leonera. They set out in several fleets of sea-going canoes, following ancient maps of knots for very long distances to finally land on Leonera. Any suspicion that a few powerful priestesses in their homeland made up these disruptions of the energy flow to get rid of a bunch of inconvenient tribal leaders and their followers is, of course, entirely unfounded. Just like any suspicion that a bunch of power-hungry priestesses made up the Great Earthmother herself in the first place.
The Amazons actually discovered some temples and “liberated” them, including one which would have been better left alone. Ever since a volcanic eruption which diverted rivers and revealed gold deposits, they’ve had to increasingly defend their jungle against intruders.
Appearance
Amazons consider clothing so strange that they refer to non-Amazons as cloth skins, but this does not stop them from adorning themselves with feathers, bracelets and the symbols of their tribal totem. You can immediately tell which tribe a fully initiated hunter or warrior belongs to. They might be wearing a crocodile mask, a monkey tail, or the claws of a giant mantis.
Even women who join the Amazons from Longfall have to submit to this dress code. You can only tell them apart from the overseas Amazons during the first few months by their civilization paleness.
Equipment
The Amazons trust in traditional materials and tools, and this includes their weapons. They carry blowpipes and bows for ranged combat, and swing obsidian blades in melee. Occasionally they bring metal with them from their old lives or trade for it, but those are exceptions. On top of that, the Amazons have large cats to tear their enemies to shreds.
Enemies from the city have the condescending smiles wiped off their faces fairly quickly when they realise that an Amazon with a bow can shoot farther and faster than their pistol can. And that the blowpipe darts, which you can never quite seem to work out where they come from, are not merely irritating but poisonous.
Characteristics
So close is the Amazons’ connection with nature that wherever they fight, there is always a forest nearby. Because some of them can move faster and see farther through that type of terrain than their enemies can, they are able to shoot enemies without being seen by them.
They should take care to avoid drawn-out brawls – these are not their forte – though the gorilla warriors beg to differ. The leader of an Amazon crew must use the speed of her fighters and use the terrain to protect her pride from harm and thus lead them to victory.
